Not all smoke is the same. Each smudging herb has a different energy, a different purpose — and a different personality.
If you've ever stood in front of a selection of smudge sticks feeling completely overwhelmed, you're not alone. White sage. Palo santo. Blue sage. Rosemary bundles. Cedar. The options seem endless, and nobody really tells you what's different.
Here's the truth: they all clear energy, but they clear it differently. Think of it like choosing between a deep-clean scrub and a gentle refresh. Same goal, different approach.
White Sage - The Deep Cleanse
White sage is the heavy lifter of the smudging world. It's powerful, potent, and thorough. This is what you reach for when a space has had an argument in it, when something feels heavy and stuck, or after a period of illness or grief.
It's also the most traditionally used herb in Indigenous American cleansing rituals — which means it carries real lineage and should be used with intention and respect, not casually.
Use it: after conflict, when moving into a new space, or after a difficult conversation.
Palo Santo - The Welcome
Where sage removes, palo santo invites. This sacred wood from South America burns sweet and warm, and its smoke is known to attract positive energy, creativity, and calm. After a sage cleanse, palo santo is the perfect follow-up — like airing out a room and then filling it with fresh flowers.
It's also gentler, which makes it a great everyday tool. Light it, walk through your home, and let it do its thing.
Use it: daily, after journalling, before meditation, or when starting a project.
How to Smudge Properly
- Open a window before you start. Energy needs somewhere to go.
- Light the tip of your smudge stick and let it flame for about 20-30 seconds, then blow it out gently so it smokes.
- Move it in slow, intentional sweeps through the room, paying attention to corners (energy stagnates there) and doorways.
- When you're done, press the lit end into a fireproof dish, an abalone shell works beautifully, until the smoke stops.
